The first thing you should know about me is that I can't swim.
Let me clarify. I can doggy paddle and I can lay on a Li-Lo quite happily for hours on end but when it comes to anything an athlete would consider "swimming", I have a style even my own Mother will cringe and refuse to look at.

The next thing you should know is that I hate running.
Actually, that's not entirely true. I'm just crap at it.
I'm a pretty fit person, I go to the gym every day and I am a Les Mills RPM Instructor teaching, on average, 3-4 classes a week. However, if you ask me to run anywhere, other than to catch a bus, you will receive a death stare Kanye West would be proud of.

Naturally, the logical challenge to take on is a half IronMan Triathlon.
Yesterday a friend and I made a deal that we would complete this challenge this year at the IronMaori half Iron Man in December. This December. 2015.

Shit.

That's a 2km swim, a 90km cycle and a 21km run. Ideally in around 6 hours.
So there you have it. My impossible

“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” - Muhammad Ali

Right now, I'm at my weakest point. I can't swim, running terrifies me and I don't own a road bike. It can't get any worse than this. Which is AWESOME!

This blog is not just for your enjoyment at my triumphs, successes, failures and (probably a lot of) tears along the way, but to document my training progress and show how far determination and dedication can push a person to achieve a goal. It's something to read over the night before the race when I am crapping my pants and desperately looking for excuses to get out of competing. Something to remind me of how far I have come.

I've got my best friend by my side in training, a public blog to hold me accountable and a few Personal Trainers and friends who've been through it all before to help when things get tough. I got this.

Have you done a triathlon or IronMan before? What would be your most important piece of advice?

  1. Sam I LOVE this! ever since I've known you, you have had such determination. And even though we are separated by lots of land and water I still see you as one of my good friends and can't wait to share this journey with you... As Iam sure I will also learn a lot about myself... As I always do with your posts xx I would say good luck, but I know that you don't need it! You are going to do awesome :)
